Acoustic PVB interlayer
Achieve Rw ratings of up to 50+ when combining the Whisper acoustic PVB interlayer within an InsulCool double glazed configuration.
Whisper sound reduction index
Product Overview
Whisper Acoustic Insulation reduces noise by using a unique acoustic PVB (Polyvinyl Butyral) interlayer, which incorporates a dampening core between the two panes of glass. This core acts to prevent vibration and eliminate the coincidence dip - a phenomenon that occurs with single panels of glass vibrating at the same frequency thus transmitting the noise through the glass.
To achieve the highest possible acoustic performance Whisper should be combined with a framing system and seals with high acoustic properties, while ensuring wall and ceiling cavities are sufficiently insulated against sound penetration. In high level external noise situations, Whisper should always be combined in a double glazed makeup with a differing glass thickness to achieve ultimate sound reduction.

Browse some of our most commonly asked questions below. Can't see your answer? Please call us on 1300 040 799 or get in touch via the contact form below.
What type of interlayer does Whisper Acoustic Glass use?
Whisper is designed around a unique acoustic PVB (Polyvinyl Butyral) interlayer which incorporates a dampening core. This core acts to prevent vibration and eliminate the coincidence dip.
Can I combine Whisper Acoustic into a double glazed window?
Absolutely. Using Whisper within a double glazed unit such as InsulCool greatly enhances the effectiveness of the acoustic properties and is a recommended configuration.
Are there any acoustic or thermal benefits from using Vanceva?
Similar to standard PVB interlayers, Vanceva interlayers enhance the performance of laminated glass by providing improved sound insulation, solar control, and UV protection.
How do I select the correct acoustic glass configuration for my project?
Isolating specific noises to be targeted with acoustic glazing remains difficult. The process of designing for noise reduction requires measuring the intensity and nature of the target sound, as well as measuring the internal sound level of a building in order to achieve a desired decibel reduction. As this may not always be possible, the chart below provides an indicative guide towards which whisper thickness is suitable for a range of common applications.

If you know your required rating for Rw (weighted sound reduction index) our glass selection tool is the easiest way to identify the most appropriate Whisper configuration for your project. You can access the tool here.

What is the co-incidence dip?
Regular monolithic glass, toughened or float, provides some acoustic insulation against noise, however it suffers from a ‘coincidence dip’ at higher frequencies. This dip causes the glass to vibrate at the same frequency as the noise, transmitting the noise through the glass. Our ears are more sensitive to these higher frequencies and as such we perceive them to be far more intrusive than lower frequencies.
The below chart shows how acoustic glass such as Whisper eliminates the co-incidence dip when compared to regular glass.
